Early Bird Cross Country Mountain Bike Race

Revised 4/19/2010

June 26th, 2010

UPDATE - Registration and race start will be located at the events office in the upper village, follow the music! Awards to be held at Bierstube Deck.

DESCRIPTION:

The Early Bird is a Cross Country Mountain Bike race traditionally held near opening day for the summer season. This is your opportunity to either show off your spring biking legs, or to get your legs up to speed for the summer biking season. This casual race is fun, often wet and muddy, and captures what early season mountain biking is all about.

This year the course will start and finish in the upper village by the old ski shop (across from the old alpinglow building, just follow the music). From there it will continue through our trail network, providing a trail that is approximately 4-5 miles in length. The trails will be chosen based on snow coverage, race course difficulty and trail condition. The three categories of riders are for different ability levels- with one lap for beginners, two laps for our sport class, and three or four laps for our expert division. This race is the warm-up race that sets the pace for the summer Thursday Night Race League series, though the course is a little longer and slightly more technical.

Likely Race course for 2010-

Up - Borealis, Elks Club. Down - Sidecar, Summit Trail and out and back on Badrock.

Week 4 (July 28 & 30)-We will continue assessment of the riding skills and make adjustments where necessary. Look for some games as a break if the riders are getting tired and some work on the art of riding switchbacks smoothly without drooping a foot or sliding a rear tire. We will also work on riding slow and how it can improve your ability to see thebeauty that surrounds us. And of course, we will be riding lots of trail.

MOUNTAIN BIKE ACADEMY

'Bikes to the Beach'

Wednesday, 8/18/10

Mountain Bike Academy Members and Parents,

Bike Academy has had some fun over the past few weeks exploring the mountain, , riding new trails, looking for huckleberries, and learning how to use and repair our bikes. Being on the mountain during the 'dog days' of summer is a great way to beat the heat. For this reason, we would like to schedule a Field Trip to City Beach in Whitefish this Wednesday, August 19th. This trip will consist of 5 coaches escorting 15-20 students from Whitefish Mountain Resort to City Beach.

Our advanced group will ride to the beach from the summit, and our less experienced group will start from the Village and ride to city beach. Drop In's are welcome to participate in this field trip.

Please arrange to drop off your child at the usual location (Lift Plaza Ticket office by chairs 1 and 2), and pick them up at 5:00pm at City Beach in Whitefish.

Please be prepared for this field trip by bringing the following supplies -

Mountain Bike (if you rent from Snowghost, we can bring your bike back up)

Sack Lunch & Backpack (Coaches can not carry students lunches)

Water Bottles (1-2L) / Camelback

Sunscreen

Sunglasses

A few dollars for Ice Cream at City Beach

A healthy smile

If the weather is poor we may decide to stay on the mountain for the day, as swimming in the rain may not be the most fun for the kids. If that is the case we will let you know at noon when you drop off your child for Mountain Bike Academy.

Thank you very much for supporting MBA, and Whitefish Mountain. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Josh Knight - 862 2911

Cannonball -Playing at the Baselodge September 25, from 1-4pm.

"Cannonball is a local Whitefish band that has been playing together in some form or another for over 10 years. Fronted by the powerful, soulful harmonies of Miss Emily Clark and Mrs Karen Minton and backed by a formidable rhythm section with mind expanding guitar solos floating over the top, Cannonball blends blues, soul, groove and jamband genres into an eyes closed, bob your head, tap your foot good time."

Hold on, You have music AND you are still open this late in the summer?

That's right, we are still open. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays after Labor Day through the month of September. Zip Lines, Alpine Slides, Mountain Biking, Walk in the Trees, Scenic Lift and Gondola Rides, and the Danny On Hiking Trail are still open. This is one of the most beautiful times of the season on the mountain - Larch trees are turning bright yellow, huckleberry bushes glow a fiery red and the temperatures are as cool as a cucumber.

Bridger Creek Boys - Playing at the Baselodge September 18, from 1-4pm.

The Bridger Creek Boys Biography -
The Bridger Creek Boys are an acoustic Bluegrass quartet steeped in old-time bluegrass tradition with a good dose of modern “Newgrass”. The Band mixes originals with covers of traditional bluegrass material (Bill Monroe, Dock Boggs, etc) and more contemporary artists (Greatful Dead, Steve Earle, The Band, etc). The Bridger Creek Boys have spent the past four years bringing their music to audiences in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado. The band was a finalist in the 2007 Telluride New Band Competition, and hosted the first and second annual Bozeman Bluegrass Festivals.

Original Bridger Creek Boys Matt Broughton (Fiddle) and Jim Dungan(Guitar) are excited to be playing with the newest members of the band, Tony Polecastro (Dobro/Banjo) and Scott Stebbins (Bass). The new line-up features an incredible energy and an outstanding level of playing. A Bridger Creek Boys show never fails to give both the band and the audience a good ol’ time!
